Alabama is celebrating its bicentennial! We’re fortunate here in the river region to be close to the center of the closing festivities taking place in Montgomery the weekend of December 13-15. Whether you’re a history buff, a music fan, or simply enjoy taking pride in this place we call home, there’s something in the bicentennial gala for you. So get out there and celebrate our rich history and culture – but make sure you do it in the right footwear.
We’re firm believers that any celebration can be ruined if your feet are killing you. Any time you anticipate doing a lot of standing and walking, here’s what our expert podiatrists, Dr. Heidi M. Christie and Dr. Chanda L. Day-Houts, would like you to remember:
Socks matter. First of all, do wear socks. Feet sweat – a lot. Without a barrier between your skin and your shoes, bacteria and fungus can easily invade your shoes and cause a toenail infection. Secondly, wear socks that don’t collect moisture. Synthetic fabrics that wick sweat away from your skin keep your feet dry and comfortable. Look for fabrics such as Coolmax and Lycra. Finally, know that you can buy socks that are stitched without uncomfortable seams and that have more cushioning where your feet need it most.
Proper support and protection help keep your feet happy. Shoes that are old and worn out don’t give you the arch support that keeps your feet from growing tired and achy. Shoes that are too tight can give you blisters. You may struggle to keep shoes that are too loose on your feet, straining muscles and soft tissues in your feet, ankles, calves, and even your knees and hips.
Footwear has come a long way in the 200 years since Alabama was born. Take advantage of the myriad socks and shoes on the market that are built to properly support and protect your feet.
